Laser Hair Removal FAQ

WHAT CAN IT DO? Laser Hair Reduction can be used to reduce or eliminate unwanted hair growth resulting in smooth, beautiful skin. Any area of the body can be treated from the fine hairs above the lips, to the underarm hairs or bikini line and even a male’s hairy back. 90% of people will achieve permanent hair reduction over an average of 4-8 treatments. Waxing, shaving and ingrown hairs become a thing of the past.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Laser Hair Reduction relies on the principle of selective absorption. A specific wavelength of light is tuned to target your hair and not your skin. Laser Hair Removal Lasers emit a pulse of red coherent light of 810nm wavelength. This is the wavelength of light absorbed by the melanin of your hair follicle. The dark hair follicle will absorb the light, be selectively heated and over repeated treatments will die back. Only hairs in the growing phase (about 30%) will be affected, meaning most people will require a minimum of 5 treatments, 4-10 weeks apart to achieve permanent hair reduction.

To deliver the best possible Hair Reduction Results Kiora is uncompromising on quality. We use only a brand new FDA-approved, Soprano XL - one of only four such systems in Australia. This is Alma Laser’s most advanced model featuring LHR technology. LHR is the latest development in laser hair removal technology - it utilises an advanced cryogen cooled, sapphire lensed 810nm Laser. Most lasers are only capable of firing once every two seconds. Kiora's latest laser system utilises patented SHR (super hair removal) technology to allow the laser to fire 50 times every second. This allows our Cosmetic Doctors to choose a lower, safer and less painful power setting whilst still delivering enough energy to cause significant thermal damage to the hair follicle. The end result is Kiora can offer our patients better, faster and most importantly safer results.

HOW DOES THE SOPRANO WORK? The Soprano XL works on a completely different paradigm to other older systems. Its impressive safety profile is achieved by using an advanced high frequency 810nm, cryogen cooled, sapphire lensed laser. Most lasers are only capable of firing once every two seconds. Kiora's newest laser system utilises patented SHR (super hair removal) technology to allow the laser to fire at up to 50 pulses every second. This allows our Cosmetic Doctors to choose a lower, safer and less painful power setting whilst still achieving an excellent hair reduction result. To achieve great hair reduction results whilst minimising the risk of adverse effects the Soprano utilises a specific wavelength of light tuned to target your hair - not your skin. An 810nm sapphire lensed Laser emits pulses of coherent light in the 810nm wavelength. This is the wavelength of light absorbed by the melanin of your hair follicle. The dark hair follicle will absorb the light, be selectively heated and over repeated treatments will die back. Only hairs in the growing phase (about 30%) can be destroyed, meaning most people will require a minimum of 5 treatments, 4-10 weeks apart to achieve hair reduction.

WHY MUST THE SESSIONS BE SCHEDULED 6-8 WEEKS APART Today many clinics are offering laser treatments scheduled only 2-4 weeks apart. At Kiora we are dedicated to providing medical procedures with geniune aesthetic benefit and we sincerely believe that to achieve the best possible hair reduction result sessions should be scheduled about 8 weeks apart - a decision which is bad for our cash flow - but good for our patients! In any hair reduction procedure only the hairs in the growing phase can be permanently destroyed - usually this comprises 20-30% of the hairs on a person's body. The hairs grow at a fixed rate in the human body. To ensure that as many of the hairs as possible are in the growing phase it is best to wait at least 8 weeks. Any shorter time period means the body has had less chance to grow back as many of the "growing phase hairs" as possible. Meaning you get less hair permanently removed for your dollar.

DOES IT HURT? Compared to other older laser or IPL systems Kiora's Soprano XL enables hair reduction which is virtually painfree. Most older treatments feel like you are been repetitively flicked with a strong rubber band. In comparison our advanced treatments with the Soprano XL feels more like a soothing hot stone massage. No anaesthetic cream is required and the cryogen cooled laser head means the skin is kept cool and protected throughout the treatment.

WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR? Hair Reduction is not for everyone. Certain skin types are more difficult to treat. Dark skinned people are less suitable for laser hair reduction and require lengthier courses of treatment. The melanin that makes their skin darkly pigmented competes for the laser light and makes selective absorption by the hair follicle more difficult. Likewise natural red-haired persons can be difficult to treat. They have little melanin in their hair for the light to target. In general most skin types, ranging from Caucasian, Mediterranean and Asian are suitable for Laser Hair Reduction. An assessment of your skin type by a Cosmetic Doctor is recommended before deciding on a treatment course.

DOES THE TREATMENT MEAN I WILL BE HAIR FREE FOREVER? The follicles in the growing phase (typically 20-30%) are permanently destoyed by the hair reduction lasers used. However, the body has a great abilit y to repair and heal itself. Over years the skin may grow brand new follicles. Meaning after the initial course of 5-8 treatments to dramatically reduce the hairs patients may need a session or two every few years to maintain the hair reduction result.

HAIR REMOVAL IS NOT A RISK FREE PROCEDURE. Poor technique, or use of inappropriate lasers can result in permanent adverse cosmetic outcomes including: inflammatory hyperpigmentaion of the skin, permanent destruction of melanocytes resulting in hypopigmentation and blisters and burns. Poor patient selection, inappropriate pre-treatment plans and inappropriate laser or IPL systems all greatly increase the risk of these adverse outcomes. To deliver the safest and best possible results Kiora is uncompromising on quality. At Kiora all Laser Hair Removal is under the direct supervision of our fully qualified Cosmetic Doctors. They are experienced in using a comprehensive range of cosmetic laser technologies for all skin types. Since a significant percentage of patients are unsuitable for the procedure each patient undergoes a comprehensive dermal consultation to discuss the health of their skin and the suitability of their skin for the procedure. Our commitment to safety and quality extends to our equipment. We use only the most advanced FDA approved Soprano XL Laser Platforms. This is Alma Laser's flagship Laser Hair Reduction model and features patented super laser hair removal technology and is FDA approved for Fitzpatrick Skin types one (Scandinavians) through to six (dark africans).

WHAT ARE THE RISKS? All Laser Hair Reduction at Kiora is supervised by our fully qualified Cosmetic Doctors. They carefully select the wavelength, duration of pulse and fluence (power) of the Harmony Laser to optimise your results - whilst also ensuring the risk of side effects is kept to an absolute minimum. The occurrence of side effects is very rare but if they should occur please do not hesitate to contact Kiora directly for advice. The major risks are:

  • Lightening of freckles and uneven pigmentation can occur. In general this results in a more even complexion. In fact many clients use a variation of our Laser Hair Reduction procedure to “photo-rejuvenate” their skin.
  • Folliculitis. In very rare cases the hair follicle might become infected. If the care plan is strictly followed the risk of this is very low.
  • Rarely the epidermis of the skin may be burnt
  • Permanent hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation of the skin. This results in an area of the skin which is either darker or lighter than the surrounding skin. This is dependent on the skin type of the client. Your Cosmetic Doctor carefully selects all potential patients to minimise this possibility. It is also more common in patients who are exposed to UV light post treatment which is why we strictly recommend the avoidance of strong sunlight and use of 15-30+ sunscreen for 4-6 weeks following a treatment.
